Arrests for Sita Smoking Scene!

A professor and five students from Savitribai Phule Pune University got arrested for allegedly offending the Hindu community’s religious sentiments. The incident revolved around a play based on ‘Ramleela’ that featured objectionable dialogues and scenes.

A viral video showed an actor playing Sita smoking a cigarette and using offensive language. The play, held on the university campus, led to a clash between members of the ABVP and Pune University’s Lalit Kala Kendra students.

Following a complaint by ABVP’s Harshvardhan Harpude, the police registered a case under section 295(A) of the Indian Penal Code for outraging religious feelings. Dr. Pravin Bhole, head of the Lalit Kala Kendra, and students were arrested.

Some people support ABVP for taking action against the university for mocking Hinduism, claiming that ridiculing Hindu customs is becoming a trend. They argue that certain so-called secular intellectuals criticize Hindus as a sign of progressive thinking, highlighting a lack of unity among Hindus.

Conversely, another group believes Hindus have become overly sensitive and intolerant. They argue that art is a form of expression, and artists should have the freedom to express themselves. Satire, being a form of art, should not be labeled as blasphemy.
