NEW DELHI: The Indian Davis Cup team concluded their historic visit to Pakistan after 60 years with a resounding victory, securing a place in World Group I.
Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni‘s comfortable win in the play-off tie against Muzammil Murtaza and Aqeel Khan sealed the team’s 3-0 lead. Bhambri and Myneni showcased their skills, leaving their opponents with little chance to challenge them.
Despite the change in the Pakistani team lineup, with Aqeel replacing Barkat Ullah, India maintained their dominance over Pakistan in the tournament.
The Indian players displayed a higher level of quality, with Myneni’s powerful serves proving difficult for the home team to handle. Additionally, Bhambri’s well-placed winners further solidified India’s advantage.
This victory marks India’s eighth consecutive win against Pakistan in the Davis Cup.
As a result, India will compete in World Group I in September this year, while Pakistan will remain in Group II.
The Indian team successfully adapted to the challenging conditions and heavy security measures, ensuring that the restrictions on their movement did not hinder their performance.
The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the players, with various agencies working together to ensure a smooth and incident-free tie.
Bhambri and Myneni took control of the match from the start, breaking Aqeel’s serve in the first and fifth games to establish a commanding 4-1 lead.
Although Murtaza showed resilience and saved three set points in game seven, Bhambri ultimately secured the first set with ease.
The second set remained highly competitive, with both teams holding their serves until it reached 5-5. However, a few errors from the Indian team allowed the Pakistanis to gain a 4-2 lead in the tie-breaker. Nevertheless, Bhambri and Myneni quickly regained control, equalizing the score at 5-5 and ultimately winning the match as Aqeel double faulted at match point.
The Indian Davis Cup team’s exceptional performance in Pakistan highlights their skill and adaptability. With this significant victory, India has cemented its place in the prestigious World Group I, showcasing the country’s growing prowess in international tennis.
