Maruti’s New Punch, Exter Rival SUV

Maruti Suzuki, a dominant force in the Indian automobile industry for decades, is set on further solidifying its market presence amidst increasing competition. The Indo-Japanese automaker is not only planning to expand its SUV product portfolio but also to venture into the electric vehicle (EV) space and micro UV segment. According to reports, the company is gearing up to introduce the Japan-spec Spacia-based MPV (codenamed YDB) and a new sub-four-meter SUV (codenamed Y43) to challenge rivals like the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. The launch of the new Maruti micro SUV is anticipated to coincide with the 2026 festive season, possibly around October or November.

While specific details about the upcoming Maruti micro SUV are currently unavailable, it is expected to feature an SUV-like stance to appeal to a wider customer base. Regarding its powertrain, Maruti Suzuki may utilize its all-new Z-Series, 3-cylinder petrol enginemaking its debut in the new-generation Swift hatchback. This engine is designed to comply with stringent BS6 emissions standards and CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) Phase 2 norms, promising both fuel efficiency and performance. In the new Swift, the 1.2L Z-Series engine with mild hybrid tech delivers a peak power of 82bhp and 108Nm of torque.

Speculations suggest that Maruti Suzuki might introduce its new Z-Series petrol engine to existing models after its debut in the new-gen Swift and Dzire. It’s also possible that the engine might be offered in different capacities to cater to a wider range of vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Indo-Japanese automaker is preparing to launch the all-new Swift in the coming months. The hatchback will feature significantly improved design, an upmarket interior, and an all-new petrol engine. However, unlike the Japan-spec Swift, the India-spec version may not include certain advanced features such as ADAS tech and a CVT gearbox.
