Introduced to the Indian market in 2015, the Maurti Suzuki Baleno hatchback has consistently proven itself as a strong seller for the automaker. Achieving the milestone of 1 million sales in late 2021, it further surpassed the 2 million mark in March 2023. Distinguished as the brand’s first production model built upon the lightweight Heartect platform, it paved the way for Maruti’s future endeavors. In 2017, the carmaker unveiled the performance-oriented Baleno RS, featuring the Boosterjet turbo petrol engine, albeit facing discontinuation in early 2020 due to the enforcement of BS6 emission standards.

Undergoing its initial facelift in 2019, followed by another in 2022, the Baleno model lineup currently encompasses Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha trims, with prices ranging from Rs 6.61 lakh to Rs 9.88 lakh (all, ex-showroom). Powering the hatch is a 90bhp, 1.2L, 4-cylinder Dualjet K12N petrol engine, paired with 5-speed manual and AMT gearboxes.

Looking forward, the Indo-Japanese automaker is set give a generation change to the Maruti Baleno. Codenamed YTA, the all-new model is slated for showroom debut sometime in 2026. It’s anticipated to feature improved styling and interior, though the spotlight will be its new hybrid powertrain. According to a fresh media report, Maruti Suzuki is diligently working a cost-effective series hybrid powertrain than Toyota’s strong hybrid tech.

The new hybrid system will integrate the new Z12E three-cylinder petrol engine, a 1.5kWh-2kWh battery pack, and an electric motor. It’s set to premiere with the Fronx facelift in 2025. The new Suzuki HEV will subsequently grace the Spacia-based MPV and Swift hatchback in 2026 and 2027, respectively. With expectations soaring, Maruti Suzuki envisions over six models featuring hybrid technology, contributing to a staggering eight lakh units in total sales annually by the decade’s end.
