Fraud In The Name Of OTT Loots 1.5 Lakhs

customer care Fraud

No matter how many awareness campaigns the government drives, people always end up falling victim to cyber crimes. This happened to a senior citizen recently.

A 68-year-old Bengaluru resident recently fell victim to a scam while seeking help from an OTT Platform’s customer care. The incident, which occurred on January 27, underscores the risks associated with fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting individuals.

Facing difficulties streaming content from his OTT app to his TV, the resident searched online for customer support and found a mobile number he believed belonged to the OTT company. Unfortunately, this marked the beginning of his financial downfall.

After contacting the number, the resident was told that an official representative would assist him. Soon after, he received a call from someone claiming to be from the OTT company. Trusting the caller, he shared sensitive subscription details, unknowingly setting the stage for monetary loss.

The scammer, posing as an executive, persuaded the resident to transfer money to resolve his technical issues. Through deceptive tactics and false assurances, the resident ended up transferring a significant sum of 1.5 Lakhs from his bank account.

There isn’t much to do in this case as money never returns. Stay informed, stay cautious, and protect yourself from cybercrime. Prevention is the only cure in such cases.
