West Ham: Manager David Moyes says club have ‘duty’ to respond to heavy defeat by Arsenal

West Ham are yet to win a match in 2024 and went out of the FA Cup to Championship side Bristol City

West Ham’s players have a “duty” to respond to last weekend’s 6-0 loss to Arsenal, said Hammers boss David Moyes.

His side play at Nottingham Forest on Saturday after suffering their heaviest home defeat in the Premier League era.

The Gunners were 4-0 up at half-time and thousands of West Ham fans left London Stadium long before the end.

“We’ve had a poor result, so we need to bounce back and we need to show it. I’m looking forward to seeing the attitude of the players,” said Moyes.

“When you’ve lost like we did, I think you’ve got a duty [to respond].

“It always shows you a little bit about your club and I think in the main the players here have been very, very good.

“We’re all in it together. We’re going to act as if it’s a blip.

“When you’ve lost badly, sometimes there are players who need to get right back out there to put it right and there will be other times when there will be players who maybe you have to take them out of the firing line for different reasons.”

Moyes managed West Ham from November 2017 to May 2018 and then returned to the club in December 2019.

Since coming back to east London, he has guided West Ham to sixth and seventh-placed finishes in his first two full seasons and then took them to the Europa Conference League title, the club’s first major trophy since 1980.

The Hammers finished 14th in the Premier League last season and are currently eighth, but Moyes has faced criticism over his team’s performances and style of play.

West Ham have scored 36 goals in their 24 league matches this season and Moyes added: “I think we’ve had really good entertainment.

“We’ve scored more goals than before and we have three or four players with the biggest countries in the world so I think we’re in a really good place.”
