Renowned director of the 90s, Rajkumar Santoshi, known for his iconic films like “Ghayal,” “Damini,” “Andaz Apna Apna,” “Ghatak,” and “The Legend Of Bhagat Singh,” has been handed a two-year jail term by a Jamnagar court due to a case involving bounced cheques.
Santoshi was preparing to begin filming his new project, “Lahore: 1947,” starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta and produced by Aamir Khan. Deol, whose last film “Gadar 2” was a 500-crore blockbuster in 2023, had high hopes from “Lahore: 1947,” but with Santoshi’s legal issues, the film’s future is now in danger and uncertain.
In 2015, Ashok Lal, from Jamnagar and owner of Shreeji Shipping, lent Santoshi one crore rupees for a film project. Santoshi issued ten cheques of ten lakh rupees each to Lal, but they bounced. Lal attempted to reach out to Santoshi, but he was unreachable, prompting Lal to file a case.
Despite being summoned by the court and fined Rs 15,000 for each bounced cheque, Santoshi failed to respond. Consequently, the court sentenced him to two years in jail and ordered him to pay Rs 2 crore instead of the initial Rs 1 crore.
Santoshi hasn’t given any reaction or responded to this verdict yet.
