4th Test: Ravichandran Ashwin becomes first Indian to achieve rare feat | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Ravichandran Ashwinwho in the third Test against England became the second Indian bowler to complete 500 wickets, achieved a rare feat on the first day of the fourth Test in Ranchi on Friday.
Ashwin took his first wicket of the match when he trapped Jonny Bairstow plumb in front in the 22nd over of the England innings.
Bairstow lined up to play a sweep shot but missed and was struck on the back thigh right in front of the stumps.India went for the review and ball-tracking showed the ball to be hitting middle-stump.
Bairstow fell for a 35-ball 38.
With this wicket, Ashwin became the first Indian to complete 1000 runs and 100 wickets against an opponent in Tests.
Here’s the list of cricketers who got to the mark before Ashwin:

  • George Giffen (Australia) vs England
  • Mony Noble (Australia) vs England
  • Wilfred Rhodes (England) vs Australia
  • Garfield Sobers (West Indies) vs England
  • Ian Botham (England) vs Australia
  • Stuart Broad (England) vs Australia

The remarkable thing about Ashwin’s record is that only the great Ian Botham (22 Tests vs Australia) achieved the double in fewer matches than the Indian spinner’s 23 Tests against England.
