Justice AM Khanwilkar
President of India Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice AM Khanwilkar as the new Lokpal chairperson.
The office of the President released a press note on the official website regarding the appointment of Justice Khanwilkar as the chairperson as well as appointment of six other members to the anti-corruption body.
The judicial members appointed are as follows:
Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy
Justice Sanjay Yadav
Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi
Other members are:
Sushil Chandra
Pankaj Kumar
Ajay Tirkey
The decision to appoint Justice Khanwilkar as the new Lokpal of India was made following a meeting by a high-level committee consisting of Prime Minister Narendra ModiChief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
The Lokpal was established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013. The Lokpal is tasked with inquiring and investigating allegations of corruption against public functionaries falling within the scope and ambit of the Lokpal Act.
Former Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, Justice Pradeep Kumar Mohanty is currently serving as the acting chairperson of the Lokpal.
