League of Ireland: Shamrock Rovers deny Candystripes with injury-time equaliser

Markus Poom headed Rovers’ equaliser in the second minute of injury-time

Markus Poom’s injury-time goal earned Shamrock Rovers a 2-2 draw with Derry City in a thrilling League of Ireland contest in Tallaght.

It was a see-saw game with all the goals coming in the second half.

The Candystripes came from behind when Patrick Hoban’s penalty cancelled out Darragh Burns’ opener before Danny Mullen came off the bench to score for the second time in four days.

But Rovers rescued a point in stoppage-time thanks to Poom’s header.

Ruaidhri Higgins’ side remain unbeaten after four games but after going into Monday’s game on top of the Premier Division, they now have dropped to second spot, two points behind Shelbourne after Damien Duff’s side earned a 1-0 win over Galway United.

Five-in-a-row seeking champions Rovers, meanwhile, are second from bottom as their winless start to the season continues, albeit having played a game less.

Pitch and wind affects early exchanges

It was a first half that saw both teams take some time to get themselves into proceedings with the wind and heavy pitch causing problems.

The first big chance of the game came on 15 minutes when Aaron Greene outpaced the Derry defence but dragged his shot across the face of goal.

Rovers again came close 10 minutes later when Graham Burke should have done better with Burns’ floated ball to the back post but the Rovers number 10 couldn’t make good contact and the chance went begging.

Derry then rued a missed chance of their own as Cameron McJannet failed to get full purchase on Ben Doherty’s ball from the right, which allowed Rovers keeper Leon Pohls to easily gather.

Burns was once again the spark for the hosts and made space for himself on the edge of the box just before half-time but dragged his shot wide.

The Candystripes were certainly causing the home defence trouble and, but for a brave block by Michael Cleary, Michael Duffy might have put them in front on the stroke of half-time.

The hosts started the second period on the front foot and a combination of Doherty and Brian Maher prevented Graham Burke from a corner but Rovers could not be denied for long.

Just before the hour mark, it was Burke running at the Derry defence and had them scrambling.

Doherty was caught out of position slightly and allowed Darragh Burns in behind to slot past Maher. The MK Dons loanee had been dangerous all night and netted his first Rovers goal.

The visitors had to respond quickly or risk getting swept up by the champions and they did just that.

Good work down the left from Doherty saw him cut it back to Duffy whose deflected effort came off the bar and Daniel Kelly couldn’t scramble home the rebound.

Derry host Waterford on Friday

However on 72 minutes, the visitors were handed a way back into the game when a clumsy challenge from Dylan Watts sent Patrick Hoban sprawling.

The striker took the spot kick himself and coolly sent Pohls the wrong way.

Shortly after, Ruaidhri Higgins threw on Friday night’s match-winner against St Pat’s Mullen and the Scottish forward delivered again as he bundled home a corner from close range on 82 minutes to give his side the lead.

However, Derry were unable to hold on as a beautiful floated Watts cross was met by the leaping Poom who headed past Maher two minutes into stoppage-time.

Next up for Ruaidhri Higgins’ men is the visit of Waterford to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on Friday night.
