Linwei Ding, once a software expert at Google, is in big trouble. He’s been charged with stealing important secrets about artificial intelligence (AI) from Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc. Ding, who is from China and 38 years old, faces four serious charges for taking these secrets. The secrets Ding supposedly stole are all about how Google’s big computers work, particularly the AI ones. These computers are super powerful and used to teach AI systems to learn things. Ding allegedly took details about the computer parts and special software that makes these machines smart. Given the craze behind AI, this is a pretty serious issue.
Ding started taking these secrets back in 2019 when he worked at Google. By May 2023, he apparently took over 500 secret files. The plan, according to the charges, was to help two Chinese companies, one of which Ding was going to work for as a top tech person.
Google got suspicious of Ding in late 2023 and found out about the stolen files. They told the police right away.
