Scotland suffered a surprise loss to New Zealand on day two of the Women’s World Curling Championship.

New Zealand made their debut at this level last year, losing every match, and were beaten by Japan on Saturday.

However, skip Jessica Smith held her nerve for an 8-6 victory after the Scots had taken three in the ninth end to level the scores.

The Scottish rink, led by Rebecca Morrison, had opened with a 6-4 win over Norway.

Italy, skipped by reigning Olympic mixed doubles champion Stefania Constantini, are Scotland’s next opponents.

The Italians enjoyed an 8-4 success against Estonia on day one in Sydney, Canada.
