Bharatiya Janta Party has spent a whopping Rs 31 crore on Google ads from January 1 to March 15 for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Most ads featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi and were in different languages. The number of ads turned out to be 14,380.
The election dates were announced by the Election Commission of India on March 16. Voting starts on April 19 in seven phases, with results on June 4.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress (INC) spent only Rs 14 lakh during this period, less than 1% of BJP’s spending. Their ads mainly featured Rahul Gandhi and were in Hindi, focusing on Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Maharashtra.
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) from Odisha spent Rs 1.8 Crore, the Telugu Desam Party from Andhra Pradesh around Rs. 40 Lakhs, and YSRCP Rs. 24 Lakhs on Google Ads between January 1 and March 15.
Major parties have been advertising on TV, Print, Radio, and Out-Of-Home for a while now. The NDA government led by Modi aims for a third term, while the opposition under the INDIA bloc hopes to challenge them.
Parties are gearing up for the polls as they draw near, focusing on alliances and candidate lists.
The Election Commission set spending limits for candidates, with a chunk going to advertising. Google requires advertisers to verify their identity and disclose funding sources for election ads.
Video ads are a big focus, with parties targeting younger voters, with BJP spending the most on them.
