SAIC Motor and the JSW Group have recently entered into a strategic joint venture, which is set to bring in electric and ICE vehicles under the MG Motor nameplate in India. A new media report claims that MG Motor will launch two new electric vehicles including a five-door SUV and a compact MPV. To be priced under Rs 15 lakh, the new MG EVs will be based on the E260 EV platform.
The new MG electric MPV is expected to be launched in less than 1 year, by March 2025. If all goes according to the plans, the new Electric MPV will be launched before the end of this year. The new MPV will be based on the Wuling Cloud MPV, which is on sale in Indonesia. It measures 4295mm in length, 1850mm in width and 1652mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2700mm.
The electric MPV will not only target family buyers, but also aimed at the fleet segment. The 3-row MG Cloud EV will also enjoy the FAME benefit from the Government of India. In terms of pricing, the new MG electric MPV and electric SUV will be positioned between the Comet EV and the ZS EV. The company will introduce a five-door rugged SUV, which will be based on the Baojun Yep Plus SUV.
MG Motor India believes that 50 percent of its total sales will come from electric vehicles in the near future. In fact, the company is planning to locally assemble batteries at its Halol based factory. Adding to it, MG is also looking at additional land on the outskirts of Vadodara to double its capacity to over 3 lakh units per annum.
The electric MPV is equipped with a 50.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a front-axle mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The combined power and torque output stands at 134bhp and 240Nm, respectively. The MPV is claimed to offer a range of up to 505km in a single charge. The entry-level variant offers a range of up to 460km in a single charge.
The MPV comes with several safety and security features including traction control, multiple airbags, blind spot monitoring, electric parking brake, brake assist, vehicle stability control system, front & rear parking sensors, rear camera, hill start assist control, TPMS and others. The MG Cloud EV also has advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) with features like Lane Departure Warning System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor, etc.
