Considering Apple currently offers 8 GB of RAM on the iPhone 15 Pro models and 6 GB of RAM on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, we could expect a slight bump in RAM across the iPhone 16 lineup. Apple is the only smartphone brand that uses NAND flash-based storage, hence, the storage speed should not be an issue. However, the company could finally start shipping 256 GB storage with the iPhone 16 series, at least on the Pro models, starting this year.
Google recently confirmed that Pixel 8 users won’t be able to run Gemini Nano on-device due to hardware limitations, which is available on the Pixel 8 Pro, which has the same processor but offers more memory. Considering this development, it becomes very evident that Apple might offer more memory, primarily to enable on-device AI experiences. There are also rumours that Apple is in talks with Google to license Gemini AI to iPhones.
Apple recently published a paper on a new technology that allows the company to run a large language model (LLM) on flash memory, and we could see the real-world implementation of the same with the iPhone 16 series. Earlier this year, Tim Cook during a recent earnings call confirmed that Apple is working on AI features, and the company is likely to showcase the same along with iOS 18 to the world at the upcoming (WWDC 2024) developers conference.
