IPL 2024: ‘We can’t be timid with our batting’ says Daniel Vettori | Cricket News

HYDERABAD: High-scoring games have been the norm this season and Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Daniel Vettori feels that their batting unit can’t be found wanting.
The New Zealander said that the management and captain Pat Cummins has given the batters a clear message: play with freedom.
“We give freedom to batters. Because the scores are high, we can’t be timid at any stage. We need to be aggressive. That is the message from Pat and me. It is not that the batters have to be reckless, but they should be ready to take down the bowlers,” he said on Thursday.
The previous match here saw SRH post a record 277/3 against Mumbai Indians and the coach is expecting another high scoring game against Chennai Super Kings on Friday.
“We are appreciative of the nature of the wicket here. The last one was a mixture of red soil, conducive for high scores. We are expecting another high-scoring match. We are gearing up for it and that puts a lot of pressure on the bowling unit. Sometimes you go for 12, 13 runs an over, it can be daunting.”
Backed vectors Mayank Agarwal to come good. “Yes, he missed out in the last two games. That is okay. He did what was expected of him in the first game, providing a good start. He has been dismissed in similar fashion in the last three outings. He is working hard on rectifying it,” he added.
Though leggie Mayank Markande is yet to make an impact, Vettori expected the spinner to play a crucial role. “Mayank did a good job against KKR. It was a tough game against MI. We see him as a real contributor to the team. He is our best leg-spinner. We value him. Particularly playing on these good surfaces, he is very important.”
Hussey promises better show
Meanwhile, CSK’s batting coach Mike Hussey said that they were a “bit off” against DC. “Delhi bowlers executed their plans well at the death. We were a bit off in all the three departments. We have spoken about it. We’ll come up with a better show here.”
Hussey also said the pitch would favour batters. “We want to improve on assessing the conditions. It looks a good pitch. It has been a nice batting wicket traditionally.”
