Lawsuit Filed Against Cinemark Theater Chain

Cinemark is one of the three most visited theaters for Telugu movie fans in the U.S. Not only that, Cinemark contributes the majority of the revenues for Telugu movie releases in this country. Now, there is a lawsuit filed against the theater chain.

A lawsuit filed in Texas federal court accuses Cinemark of selling 24-ounce cups that can only hold a maximum of 22 ounces of liquid. The lawsuit claims this is part of a pattern of deceptive packaging and pricing practices by the theater chain.

The lawsuit highlights the importance of concession sales for theaters, as they keep all revenue from food and beverage sales compared to sharing ticket sales with studios. Cinemark’s focus on concession offerings and pricing led to record-high sales in 2023, according to CEO Sean Gamble.

The lawsuit argues that consumers may believe they are getting a better deal with larger cups but actually pay less per ounce with smaller sizes like the 20-ounce cup. Texas resident Shane Waldrop, who bought a 24-ounce cup, found it could only hold 22 ounces, supporting the lawsuit’s claims.

Cinemark has not commented on the lawsuit so far.
