Sanju Samson Creates History; Becomes First Player In The World To Score 3500 Runs For Rajasthan Royals In IPL History

Sanju Samson created history in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) on Monday (April 22) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, with the table-toppers looking set for another victory.

The RR skipper walked out to bat in the chase of 180 with his team in cruise control of the chase after a quick-fire opening partnership between If Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Buttler was dismissed by Piyush Chawla after a rain break following a knock of 35 in 25, while Jaiswal made his first 50+ score of the season.

Samson continued RR’s momentum as they raced towards a straightforward victory by giving Jaiswal solid support. The 29-year-old created history in the process as he became the first Royals’ batter in history to complete 3500 runs in the IPL. In fact, the Royals captain is the only player to achieve the feat of 3000 runs for the frachise in the IPL, with Buttler nearing the milestone and being just 19 runs behind.

Samson joined RR in 2013 and has been part of the franchise ever since. Apart from his heroics in the IPL, the wicketkeeper batter also played a key role in RR reaching the final of the 2013 Champions League.

Samson was appointed RR’s captain ahead of the 2021 season and led them to their second final in 2022, when they lost to the Gujarat Titans (GT).

Overall, across all competitions, Samson has played 138 matches for the franchise and has 3717 runs to his name with an average of 31.50.

As far as the IPL is concerned, Samson has played a total of 160 matches in which he has 4202 runs with three centuries and an average of 30.44. Apart from his stint with RR, Samson played for Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) in 2016 and 2017. For the Delhi-based franchise, he made 677 runs in 28 matches in the IPL with an average of 27.08.
