Disney has released the first trailer for the prequel to the 2019 remake of ‘The Lion King’. It is created with a technology that will provide photorealistic animation similar to the 2019 remake.

It will be for the first time that a Lion King prequel is being made. The trailer starts with a young Mufasa who goes through an adventure to become the king of the jungle. Mufasa is seen going through all the shades of character development expected from a protagonist, from moments of realisation to valour and fighting for his people.

Mufasa was the king of the jungle and father of Simba, the protagonist of the Lion King movie, who was killed by his brother Scar. In the original movies, Mufasa has a short but important role given his fate and importance in Simba’s journey.

There is one big change this time, Disney has moved on from their original choice for Mufasa’s voice, James Earl Jones. Aaron Pierre has been cast to voice the younger version of King Mufasa. Kelvin Harrison Jr, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and John Kani are the other artists to voice different characters in the movie.

The Lion King (1994) was a game changer for Disney and animated cinema due to its critical and financial success. After its initial release, it grossed $968.5 million and became the highest-grossing animated movie of all time and second-highest movie of all time, with only Jurassic Park beating it.

The 2019 remake almost doubled the original’s box office ($1.66 billion). It became the highest-grossing animated movie and the seventh-highest-grossing movie of all time at the time of its release. Film critics are expecting a similar fate from the upcoming prequel.

Mufasa: The Lion King will hit the theatres on 20 December.
