Match Result: Uganda W v Thailand W
- Uganda 62 all out (17.4/20 overs)
- Thailand 64/1 (11.3/20 overs)
- Thailand won by 9 wickets
Uganda’s Victoria Pearls suffered their second defeat at the Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers in Abu Dhabi losing to Thailand by nine wickets.
It was a game where the Ugandans needed to win so that they can push for a semifinal place but the defeat throws a spanner in those works with their final group game against favorites Sri Lanka.
Thailand won the toss and elected to field first under the lights. Some disciplined bowling from the Thai team strangled the run scoring for the Ugandans, Proscovia Alako and Immaculate Nakisuyi had a good start but failed to continue falling in quick session.
Janet Mbabazi (14) got a great start but she lost her wicket trying to steal a single that was unnecessary and that stopped the batting challenge from the Ugandans with the final six wickets falling for 24 to finish on 62 all out inside 18 overs. Rita Musamali (23) played a lone hand in a very poor batting display from the Victoria Pearls against 13th ranked Thailand.
In the run chase, with three runs needed per over for Thailand to get over the line, they easily found the required runs to ensure that they were always ahead of the requirement.
The Ugandans failed to put the choke hold on the run scoring from the Thai girls as they easily got to the finishing line within 12 overs with only one wicket dropped.
The loss virtually knocks Victoria Pearls out of the tournament unless they find a way against Sri Lanka in their final group game on Wednesday.
Uganda drop to fourth in Group A behind leaders Sri Lanka, Scotland and Thailand in second and third respectively.
