Why EC Puts 48-Hour Ban on KCR?

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has slapped a 48-hour campaigning ban on former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), citing his “derogatory and objectionable statements” against the Congress party.

KCR’s remarks, made during an April 5 press conference in Sircilla, included calling Congress leaders ‘sons of dogs’ and labeling the government as ‘lathkhors’ (stick-wielders) and ‘pakka chavatas, daddammas, chetakani chavatas’ (useless fellows).

The ECI’s action follows a complaint by TPCC senior vice president G Niranjan, highlighting KCR’s disparaging comments against Congress lawmakers. These remarks were deemed as unverified accusations and derogatory, potentially damaging the opposition party’s reputation and affecting the electoral process’s fairness.

The ban prohibits KCR from holding public meetings, processions, rallies, interviews, and making public utterances in the media, including electronic, print, and social media, for 48 hours starting from 8:00 PM on May 1, 2024.
