Doha Diamond League 2024 Highlights: Neeraj finishes 2nd with 88.36m throw

It’s been a forgettable start for the Odisha-based athlete as his third attempt of 76.31m keeps him in the ninth spot after three rounds of throws.

Neeraj once again moves to the second spot in the table after improving his second attempt of 84.93m to 86.24m on his third try. But he remains behind Vadlejch, who betters his throw to 88.38m on his third attempt

Neeraj jumps to the second spot in the table with his first legal attempt of 84.93m. He still stands behind Vadlejch, who improved his 1st attempt to 86.93 on his second opportunity.

Vadlejch stands ahead with his 85.67m throw, followed by Peters (80.68m) and Edis Matussevicius (77.73m). Jena stands fifth as of now

Kishore Jena makes a legal throw of 75.72 in his first attempt.

Not the start that Neeraj would want. It’s a foul throw from the Indian, who is second participant to make his attempt. Jakub Vadlejch was the first to throw and he registered an 85.87m attempt.

We are just minutes away from the men’s javelin to kick off. Currently, women’s High Jump is underway along with women’s 1500m race.

Neeraj is not the sole Indian player in the men’s javelin throw event as Kishore Kumar Jena will accompany him. The Odisha based athlete is an Asian Games silver medallist and boasts the second-longest javelin throw by an Indian. In the 2023 Asiad in Hangzhou, Jena broke his personal best twice in the same competition. In his third attempt in the competition, he delivered an 86.77m throw which even put him in the leaderboard for a moment. He bettered it to 87.54, on his next attempt, but Neeraj outperformed it with a gold-medal-winning throw of 88.88m.

While Neeraj has achieved stardom in India, winning the nation of 1.4 billion’s first Olympic athletics gold at Tokyo 2020, membership of the elite 90m club has so far escaped him. “I really want to break this barrier,” Chopra told a news conference, a day before the Diamond League meeting in the Qatari capital. “I am stuck between 88 and 90 metres.

Neeraj Chopra was not part of the 2022 edition of the meet. It was Peters who bagged the top position after having delivered the fifth-longest throw in history (93.07m) at the Qatar Sports Club. Vadlejch finished second with 90.88m throw and Weber third with 86.09m throw.

Olympic and world-medallist Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic finished second with his highest attempt of 88.63m, while former world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada took the third spot with his attempt of 85.88m.

The reigning Olympic champion kicked off the event last year with a sensational throw of 88.67m in his first attempt. He then registered throws of 86.04m, 85.47m, 84.37m and 86.52m, respectively in his second, third, fourth and sixth attempts, while his fourth attempt was a foul. With that performance, he finished in the top position and bagged eight qualification points from the first Diamond League leg of 2023.
