Samsung showcased several types of microdisplays at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2024 event. The company showcased an OLEDoS screen for extended-reality (XR) headsets, an OLED screen for military use like rifle scopes, and a bot that can test the durability of OLED screens.
The company’s RGB OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) panel for Extended Reality (XR) devices was displayed at the event. It is made by eMagin, a company that Samsung Display acquired last year. It is a 1.03-inch RGB OLED panel with a 3,500ppi pixel density. It is suited for AR, VR, and XR headsets and is made using a new Fine Silicon Mask (FSM).
This FSM enables denser pixel realization than conventional Fine Metal Masks (FMM). It is created by microscopic holes using a semiconductor lithography process, and the industry has expressed a lot of interest in it.
Samsung Display also showcased OLED microdisplays for military uses, including one that is designed for rifle scopes.
The company has also designed a bot that can test the durability of OLED panels. It is repurposed from a bot that was used in the OLED production line. This bot can shake a 7.6-inch foldable OLED panel in a tank full of water, sprinkle pepper and salt, scrub it with an iron scrubber, and pour steel beads on it.
