OpenAI on Backfoot Against Scarlett Johansson’s Voice

AI assistant accessed through voice commands, is a popular trope used in entertainment mediums, especially science fiction movies. Jarvis from “Ironman” and Samantha from “Her”, are the 2 most famous examples of this trope. The closest real-life technology available to a common man was the voice assistants of smartphones like Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant which perfectly delivered the job they were designed for but didn’t have the technological advancements to perform effortless human interactions and advanced reasoning problems.

However, the recent revolution in Artificial Intelligence has changed the way we perceive AI and Open AI has played a huge role in it. Their latest updated version of Chat Gpt 4o (O for omni) has taken even larger leaps in terms of tech and they have introduced a voice-enabled chatbot that truly works similar to what we have consumed in movies. Apparently one of the voices available for the voice-enabled chatbot sounds too similar to Scarlett Johansson who played the role of AI voice assistant in the film “Her”. And this fact was even embraced by the CEO, Sam Altman, as he posted the word “Her” on X.

The actress was in shock and disbelief as she heard the voice of “Sky” (the name of the voice which sounds similar to Scarlett’s), claiming the similarities were eerie. The CEO had previously approached the actress and asked her to give her voice to the AI model as he is a huge fan of the movie “Her” but she declined it. Later “Sky” was voiced by some other voice artist that sparked this controversy.

On Monday, Open AI released a statement claiming that AI should not deliberately mimic an artist’s distinctive voice and Sky is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson’s voice. The questions they are facing right now have made them halt the use of Sky as one of their voice models unless everything gets sorted.
