Apple WWDC 2024: What to expect

Apple is set to unravel its latest AI innovations at WWDC 2024 on June 10. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, these AI features may not be as flashy as the ones currently offered by Google, Microsoftor OpenAI but will focus on practical applications such as transcribing voice memos and auto-generating emojis.

A notable announcement is expected to be a partnership with OpenAI, which will see deeper integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s operating systems. Additionally, Apple is reportedly negotiating with Google for integration with its Gemini AI, and talks with Anthropic are also underway.

Apple WWDC 2024 is set for June 10-June 14.

One significant feature likely to be introduced is a smart recap tool. This feature will summarise missed texts, notifications, and various media, such as web pages, news articles, and documents, helping users manage their iOS notifications more effectively.

The Voice Memo app is anticipated to gain AI-generated transcription capabilities, expanding on existing features like voicemail transcripts and system-wide captions.

Apple plans to enhance several other features with AI, including on-device Spotlight search, Safari internet searches, and writing suggestions for emails and texts. AI may also be used to retouch photos and generate emojis based on text content.

Siri is expected to receive upgrades, including a more natural-sounding voice and improved functionality on the Apple Watch. Apple aims to perform as many AI tasks locally on devices as possible, with more complex operations handled by M2 Ultra-based servers.

Beyond AI advancements, Apple may introduce an iOS 18 feature that allows users to change app icon colours more easily. Another anticipated change is the ability to arrange app icons freely on the home screen.

iOS 18 is widely reported to be the most ambitious iOS update in Apple’s history. As the company strives to catch up with competitors like Google and Microsoft, all eyes will be on Apple to see how it balances innovation with the security and privacy standards integral to its devices and software.
