According to NASA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the storm emanated from the sunspot AR3664 on May 27 and was a class X2.8, making it one of the most intense solar events in recent years, a report by NDTV states.

NASA mentions on its website, “Solar flares are giant explosions on the sun that send energy, light and high speed particles into space.” It adds, “The biggest flares are known as ‘X-class flares’ based on a classification system that divides solar flares according to their strength.”

This geomagnetic disturbance, caused by a massive eruption on the sun’s surface, is expected to trigger widespread blackouts across regions. While such celestial events are not uncommon, the timing of this particular solar storm raises concernsas it coincides with the peak of summer, when heat waves and soaring temperatures can pose significant health risks during prolonged power outages.

In the face of this impending cosmic onslaught, it is imperative for individuals and families to take precautionary measures and equip themselves with the necessary knowledge and resources to remain safe and comfortable in the event of a blackout amidst sweltering summer conditions.

Singh retd. joint director Department of Education and expert in Constellations and  Geography, Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh explains, “A solar storm occurs when the Sun emits large bursts of energy in the form of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This particular storm is considered powerful because it’s expected to release a high amount of charged particles that can interact with Earth’s magnetic field, potentially causing geomagnetic storms strong enough to disrupt power grids and communication systems. Solar physicists track these events using satellite data and models to predict their impact.”

Impact on power grids and infrastructure

According to Singh, solar storms can induce electric currents in power lines, transformers, and other infrastructure, potentially leading to blackouts.

“The storm’s charged particles can cause geomagnetic induced currents (GICs) that overload electrical systems. Regions closer to the poles, where the Earth’s magnetic field lines convergeare at higher risk. High-latitude areas in North America and Europe are particularly vulnerable,” he says.

While regions closer to the poles are more at risk, he continues, a powerful solar storm can have far-reaching effects. “India could experience disruptions in communication systems, satellite services, and potentially localised blackouts if the storm is strong enough,” he agrees.

Preparing for blackouts during summer heat

As India grapples with the constant high temperatures and heatwaves, it is essential to prepare for blackouts that can occur due to solar storms. Here’s what you need to do, as Singh states:

Stay Hydrated: Ensure you have enough water for everyone in your household. Dehydration is a significant risk during summer blackouts.

Emergency Supplies: Stock up on non-perishable foods, batteries, flashlights, and a first aid kit.

Cooling Strategies: Use battery-powered fans, wet towels, and cool packs to stay cool. Keep blinds and curtains closed to maintain indoor temperatures.

Backup Power: If possible, have a generator or solar-powered battery system ready.

Communication Plan: Ensure you have a charged mobile phone and an emergency communication plan with family and friends.

Measures by utility companies and governments

Utility companies are taking steps to mitigate the impact of solar storms by strengthening grid infrastructure, installing GIC-resistant equipment, and developing rapid response plans, Singh informs.

He adds, “Governments are collaborating with space weather organisations to monitor solar activity and issue warnings. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other agencies provide real-time updates and alerts.”
