A person was killed in a landmine explosion in the Kongala hills forest under Wajedu mandal of Mulugu on Monday. The deceased was identified as 55-year-old Yellandula Yesu. Reports suggest that the outlawed CPI (Maoists) planted the landmine. Yesu, along with two other villagers — Ramesh and Phakir from Jangannathapuram village ventured into the forest to collect firewood.

Unaware of the surroundings, Yesu stepped on a landmine, causing a loud explosion that shook the area and killed him instantly. The police suspect there may be several other landmines planted in the forest area, targeting police personnel conducting combing operations. They have warned villagers to avoid entering the forest for their safety. Superintendent of Police (SP) P. Sabarish, expressed his condolences to the family of Yellandula Yesu and assured the bereaved family of government assistance.

Following the shifting of Yesu’s body to the government hospital in Etunagaram for postmortem, Sabarish visited the hospital and provided immediate financial aid to the family for funeral expenses.

The SP condemned the actions of the Maoists, urging them to stop harming innocent lives to assert their presence. He issued a stern warning that legal action would be taken against Maoist sympathisers and supporters, urging the public not to provide shelter or assistance to those responsible for such violence.  Venkatapuram Circle Inspector Kumar and other officials accompanied the SP.
