Upgraded to the X3 m40i from an Endeavour: Impressions after 1,000 km

Overall I received a FE of 9.9 km/l over a distance of ~750 km, which is more than what I use to get from my Ford Endeavour.

BHPian Wanderers recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Bought home my X3 M40i on 20-May. After initial driving of ~300 km in city could not stop myself from testing it over long drive and specially the mountains roads which I would like to take it along. Burning summer was excuse which I gave wifey to drive to mountains in rush period

Started from Delhi 7 AM in morning and took the road to Mukteshwar via Naukuchiatal in Uttarakhand. Was careful to drive without the temptation to speed up on straight roads. On mountain road again was careful not to go off road without slowing down. By the time I reached my destination on day 1, I got use to driving this car as the low profile tyres were playing high in my mind and was extremely carefully about it. Happy to say that my fear was put to rest by the car performance. Yes the ride quality is an issue but can live with it. I also kept my tyre pressure little high (40 psi)

As per specification in the car, tyre pressure is 38 psi for front and 42 psi for rear for loaded car. It is 32/35 for psi for 2-3 person. Although we were only couple with luggage each still went with 40 psi, reason, I was driving this car with 35 psi on city road and ride quality did not change much when I increased it to 37 psi so I guess few psi does not matter.

I drove 80% in eco pro and 20% in comfort mode. Did not try sports but on return trip did try sports gear-box mode to do some overtakings on two lane road. I indeed got a push back in my seat while accelerating. Another thing I noted that even in echo pro mode, if you floor the accelerator, the car behaves like in sports including the sound.

Another good features the car has is the coasting mode. If you move off the accelerator, the engine braking do not come in play and car continues to move as in neutral as far as it can.

I also drive on broken mountain roads as roads to Mukteshwar (8-10 km) are in bad shape but no concern except the ride quality. I was happy to see a BMW 3-series and Mercedes C class also giving me company and perhaps confidence to each other.

One bad thing about the car (apart from ride quality) is that as per user manual auto start function is not suppose to get activated on incline but it did got activated while going downhill but did not while going uphill.

Overall I received a FE of 9.9 km/l over a distance of ~750 km, which is more than what I use to get from my Ford Endeavour except that X3 is petrol and likes to drink RON 95 petrol and further BMW M recommends Shell grade premium fuel. Well I used Indian Oil XP95.
