India’s 5 Top-Selling SUVs – Fronx Beats Nexon

May 2024 was a decent month for the Indian automotive industry in terms of sales. Nearly 3.49 lakh units of passenger vehicles were retailed last month as opposed to 3.34 lakh units in the corresponding month the previous year. The industry recorded a YoY sales growth of 4.4 percent.

Talking about the model-wise sales, Maruti Suzuki’s Swift emerged as the top-selling car in the country with total sales of 19,393 units. However, SUVs continue to lead the sales chart, with Tata Punch retaining the top position. The compact SUV registered sales of 18,949 units against 11,124 units in the same month last year, accounting for a 70 percent YoY sales growth.

With sales of 14,662 units, the Hyundai Creta stood in the second position, registering a marginal YoY sales growth of 1 percent. The mid-size SUV, which received a mid-life update earlier this year, continued generating volume for the South Korean automaker. Currently, it’s available with three engine options – 160bhp, 1.5L turbo petrol, 115bhp, 1.5L petrol, and 116bhp, 1.5L diesel – priced between Rs 13.48 lakh and Rs 24.47 lakh.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza grabbed the third spot with sales of 14,186 units against 13,398 units in May 2023, recording a YoY growth of 6 percent. Prices of the subcompact SUV start from Rs 8.34 lakh and go up to Rs 14.14 lakh. Mahindra’s Scorpio was India’s fourth top-selling SUV in May 2024. The model lineup (including both Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic) recorded total sales of 13,717 units as opposed to 9,318 units, accounting for a YoY growth of 47 percent.

Maruti Suzuki’s Fronx compact SUV secured the fifth position in the list of India’s 5 best-selling SUVs with sales of 12,681 units. Interestingly, it outnumbered the Tata Nexon subcompact SUV by a margin of 1,224 units. The latter recorded total sales of 11,457 units against 14,423 units in the corresponding month last year.
