Mahindra & Mahindra has aggressive product strategy for the Indian market. The indigenous automaker has several new models in the pipeline including SUVs and EVs slated to arrive in the next 5-6 years. The Mahindra Bolero is one of the models ready to receive a generational change along with an electric powertrain at a later stage. While the former will hit showrooms by 2026, the Bolero EV will come by 2030.
Codenamed U171, the new-generation Mahindra Bolero is expected to come with significantly improved design, interior and a new turbo diesel engine. Reports suggest that the SUV might come with a new 2.2L turbo diesel motor delivering a maximum power of 132bhp and 320Nm of torque. This oil burner also does duty in the Thar. The new Bolero will also come with the 1.5L turbo diesel motor, borrowed from the Marazzo MPV.
The all-new Bolero could also be offered with multiple seating configurations. The SUV might also get safer than before with features such as dual airbags, vehicle reverse parking sensors, ABS with EBD, speed alert system, driver and co-driver seat belt reminders and manual override for the central locking system as standard. In terms of features, the Bolero is expected to get a touchscreen infotainment system, power windows, new AC unit with rear AC vents, multi-functional instrument console, etc.
Details of the Mahindra Bolero EV are scanty. However, it’s likely to underpin the brand’s new born-electric INGLO skateboard platform – codenamed P1. The same architecture, which was previewed with the Thar.e concept, supports wheelbase between 2,775mm and 2,975mm. The current generation Bolero SUV comes with a wheelbase of 2,680mm.
Besides platform, the Bolero EV might share its powertrain with the Thar.e concept that was equipped with the 109bhp/135Nm front motor and 286bhp/535Nm rear motor. The exact battery specs are yet to be revealed. Though, Mahindra had confirmed that its new INGLO platform can accommodate battery packs with capacity of 60kWh – 80kWh, offering an electric range of around 325km and 435km-450km, respectively.
