Aamir Khan is set to star in the upcoming sports drama Sitaare Zameen Par, alongside Genelia D’Souza. The project, under the direction of R. S. Prasanna, has quietly been in production and recently completed shooting.

It’s an official remake of the acclaimed Spanish sports drama ‘Campeones’ (2018).
The film follows a basketball coach who takes on mentoring a team of mentally disabled children as part of his community service. It’s seen as a spiritual successor to the beloved classic Taare Zameen Par (2008).

In Bollywood, the genre is playing a crucial role these days in a film’s success. While smaller, well-crafted films like ‘Munjya’ are becoming big hits, big-budget projects are faltering if their genre doesn’t resonate with audiences.
Unfortunately, sports drama, once a favorite, is one such genre that seems to have lost its appeal.

Recent examples like Maidaan and Chandu Champion are failing to recover even half of their huge budgets, despite being well-made.
Now, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ faces similar challenges. The sports drama genre may not attract a wide audience anymore. To make things worse, it is also a remake, which often carries its own set of negativity.
It’s been almost 8 years since an Aamir Khan movie worked at the box office. His last film Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022 was a washout and his performance also was heavily trolled. He needs a good comeback.
We have to see if the goodwill and recall value of Taare Zameen Par rubs on Sitaare Zameen Par and gives Aaamir Khan a much-needed hit.
