Secret service agent opens fire on robbers in Orange County: police

Police in Tustin are searching for the alleged suspects who robbed a member of the U.S. Secret Service at gunpoint before the agent returned fire.

It happened Saturday night around 9:40 p.m., according to the Tustin Police Department.

After receiving reports of a possible robbery, officers responded to the intersection of Stratus Lane and Westwind Drive in the Tustin Fields residential community.

Officers found the victim, who identified himself as a member of the U.S. Secret Service and said his bag was stolen at gunpoint. During the alleged robbery, the agent opened fire on the suspects as they fled, officials said.

Some of the agent’s belongings have been recovered, police said, but the suspects remain outstanding.

Police say it’s unknown if any of the suspects were hit by the agent’s gunfire. A 2004-06 silver Infiniti FX35 or similar vehicle was seen leaving the scene, and police released an image captured by security footage as it drove off.

The Police Department is asking for the public’s help to identify those involved in the armed robbery. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Graciela Melendrez by email or by calling 714-573-3372.

President Joe Biden was in Southern California over the weekend to attend a fundraising event in Los Angeles. It’s unclear if this agent was assigned to the president’s detail.
