Jeep’s India product portfolio currently includes four SUVs – Compass, Meridian, Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. The American automaker plans to expand its model lineup with a new mid-size SUV that’s expected to hit roads by 2026. As per a fresh media report, the company will bring in the low-cost version of the new-generation Jeep Renegade that’s reported to be under development. The SUV’s all-new version will go on sale in global markets by 2027. The new Jeep mid-size SUV will be based on the modular CMP (Common Modular Platform), developed and used by PSA Group and Dongfeng. The same architecture underpins the Citroen C3 hatchback in India.
‘Prince’ Family Engine
Besides sharing platform with Citroen, the upcoming new Jeep SUV might borrow powertrains from the Citroen C3 and C3 Aircross. These models are available with a 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that’s good enough for 110bhp and 190Nm. In global markets, the new-gen Jeep Renegade is reported to be offered with the EP6DT 1.6L direct-injection turbo petrol engine that belongs to PSA-BMW’s compact engine ‘Prince’ family. This motor comes in several outputs and extensively used across the Citroen and Peugeot model lineup. It has a special low pressure die cast cylinder head and offers a claimed power of 150PS/180PS.
Pricing & Rivals
Measuring around 4.2 meters in length, the new Jeep Renegade SUV will be positioned against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. It’s estimated to be priced around Rs 15 lakh for the base variant and up to Rs 20 lakh for the top-end trim.
In other fresh updates, Jeep has dropped its plan to introduce the new-generation Compass SUV in India by 2026. The reason behind this decision is said to be the project’s (codenamed J4U) inability to meet the market viability for the Indian market. The American automaker will introduce the Jeep Meridian facelift in the second half of this year. The three-row SUV is likely to receive subtle cosmetic changes and feature upgrades, while its powertrain will remain unchanged. The new Meridian is likely to come with the new ADAS suite along with all existing features.
