Afghanistan streets erupt with celebrations as team qualifies to T20 WC semis

Large crowds have gathered on the streets of Nangarhar and Khost and other provinces in Afghanistan celebrating and cheering as their team entered the semi-finals of the T20 World cup on Tuesday.

In the videos that have erupted on the internet roads were seen fully covered with crowds that came out in support of their team.

Rashid Khan and Co have created history on Tuesday as they have entered the semi-finals of the T20 World cup for the first time. They had beaten Bangladesh by 8 runs and had eliminated the Aussies to secure a place in the Semis.

Back in West Indies at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent, the Afghan players have also celebrated in their style. The players had done what team India in 2011 had done by lifting their head coach, Jonathan Trott on the shoulders.

Dwayne Bravo’s celebration after the qualification of Afghanistan also won hearts over the internet. He is one of the coaches to the Afghan side. Some players were seen in tears as their team qualified for the semis.

Afghanistan had surprised many in the on-going T20 World Cup as they beat New Zealand and Australia. After their win over Bangladesh, Captain Rashid Khan said, that “Only Brain Lara had predicted that we’d qualify for the Semis and we met him and told we won’t let him down.”

Afghanistan will face South Africa in the Semi-finals.
