With the aim of maintaining its lead in the Indian automotive market, Maruti Suzuki plans to strengthen its UV (utility vehicle) product portfolio in the coming years. The two upcoming models being discussed are the 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara and a three-row compact MPV based on the Suzuki Spacia. While the former is expected to arrive by 2025, the latter might debut in 2026. It is important to note that there are no official words from Maruti Suzuki on these upcoming models and their launch timeline.
If media reports are to be believed, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki 7-seater SUV (codenamed Y17) is likely to share its platform, features, and powertrain with its 5-seater sibling. The Grand Vitara is currently available with a 1.5L, 4-cylinder K15C mild hybrid petrol engine and a 1.5L, 3-cylinder strong hybrid petrol setup. Rumor has it that the Grand Vitara-based three-row SUV could be offered in both 6 and 7-seat layouts. Compared to its 5-seater sibling, the 7-seater SUV will surely be longer and might feature a few cosmetic changes.
When launched, the new Maruti Suzuki 7-seater SUV is likely to be priced above Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete against the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus, Tata Safari, and Hyundai Alcazar.
The Indo-Japanese automaker is also reported to introduce the Suzuki Spacia-based mini MPV in India. In the company’s product lineup, it will sit below the Ertiga and compete with the Renault Triber. Codenamed YDB, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki 7-seater MPV is likely to have a boxy stance similar to its donor model. Unlike the Japan-spec Spacia that comes with a sliding rear door, this new sub-4 meter MPV in India could get conventional hinged units to achieve competitive pricing. In Japan, the Spacia is available with a 660cc engine. Here, it’s expected to be offered with a 1.2L Z-Series petrol engine that powers the new Swift hatchback.
