The American Council on Education (ACE) and other education groups have asked the U.S. Department of State to fix long delays in processing student visas at U.S. consulates in India. This problem is troubling because more Indian students are enrolling in U.S. colleges.
In a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, ACE President Ted Mitchell noted a big 35% increase in Indian student enrollments for the 2022-2023 school year. They expect even more students in 2024-2025.

They’re worried because visa interviews are now scheduled 100-200 days ahead, which could make students miss the beginning of their academic programs in the fall.
Mitchell stressed that the State Department and U.S. embassies in India need to act early to handle the rush of visa requests, especially during the summer. They’ve also asked embassies for plans to manage the expected surge in visa applications.

ACE is very concerned about these delays. They say Indian students made up a quarter of all international students in the U.S. last year. They want the State Department to prevent more delays for the upcoming school year.
Students have faced difficulties using the online system to schedule visa interviews, trying multiple times throughout the day and night.
