A couple of days’ break is enough for people to forget about their life and go on a trip. They enjoy themselves and return with renewed vigor in their hearts. But only in tourist destinations they forget their responsibilities and throw garbage, plastic, break drinking bottles and return the tourist destination literally as a garbage bin. To control such irresponsible tourists, a tourist destination has formulated an innovative rule. You should also bring a litter cover with you when you visit this site. Oh, is this the rule? This rule for which tourist destination? Here is the answer to your curiosity.
Sikkim is the second smallest state in India that grows the spice Chakka in abundance. This state, which has the least population after Goa, depends on tourism for its income. With a population of approximately six lakh, the state is a major tourist attraction due to its cold winds and snowy terrain.
But the number of tourists is increasing every year
Although tourism has increased the income, Sikkim’s cleanliness and environmental balance has started to deteriorate. Locals are fed up with excessive plastic and waste that is overflowing at tourist spots. Therefore, the local administration has advised the tourists to come on the trip with a garbage cover.
The Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation has issued an order that all tourist vehicles entering Sikkim must bring a big bag of garbage.
This decision was taken for community participation to achieve the goal of environmental sustainability. The department ordered that it is the job of tour operators, travel agencies and drivers to convince tourists to use bags for garbage disposal.
Henceforth tourist vehicles have been mandatorily inspected. The department has warned tourists and local travel agents that they will be fined heavily if found violating the order.
The department has also organized many programs to create awareness among tourists about garbage management. In recent years, there has been a problem of landslides in many places, including Gangtok in Sikkim, and environmental experts have opined that the reason for that is the excessive addition of plastic in the water body and environment there.
Already in schools in Sikkim there is a lot of awareness work going on, including recycling of garbage. But with a population of only six lakhs, Sikkim is visited by approximately 20 lakh tourists every year. For this reason, the problem of garbage has worsened, and now a rule has been made that tourists should bring bags to solve the problem of garbage. On the other hand, social media has also criticized this rule.
