A four-year-old boy from Bharuch district, showing symptoms of Chandipura Viral Encephalitis (CHPV), was admitted to Vadodara’s Gujarat Medical Education Research Society (GMERS) late Monday. The tribal boy is the first patient from the district suspected to have contracted CHPV.
According to Bharuch health department officials, the boy, a resident of Ghanikhut village, first turned up at the community health centre in Netrang two days ago. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the Rajpipla Civil Hospital on Monday evening. At night, he was shifted to GMERS with high fever and convulsion.

Bharuch District Health Officer Dr J S Dhulera said, “The condition of the boy is stable and we are in contact with his doctors… His blood samples have been sent to the laboratory in Gandhinagar and the National Institute of Virology at Pune for testing and the reports are awaited.”
“His elder sister, who is six years old, also had fever but we found no symptoms of Chandipura virus,” he added.
When contacted, Bharuch District Collector Tushar Sumera said, “With the first suspected case being reported from Ghanikhut, we have pressed into service our survey teams in the village, which has population of over 1,200. We have also started awareness campaign in neighbouring villages.”
Students of government and the private schools in the area are being made aware about the virus and its symptoms, he added.
