Apprising the court about the ongoing CBI investigation, Mr. Mehta says that in the case of the Oasis School leak, the breakthrough came when the Bihar Police retrieved a piece of burnt paper. The brunt paper contained the unique number of a NEET question paper.
On May 5 morning, CCTV footage caught a person breaching the strong room in Oasis school where the question papers were stored in one-time-tearable plastic covers before distribution to the candidates during the exam.
The intruder had taken photos of the question paper and passed it on to eight solvers. Photocopies of the leaked paper along with the solved answers were shown to students who had paid the gang. They were told to memorise the answers. The copies may have then been burnt.
The candidate who got the original copy of the question paper had given a statement to the CBI that the plastic cover in which she received it was sealed together using a lighter.
“This candidate was genuine and had no part in the leak. The unique number of the burnt scrap had led the CBI to this candidate”, Mr. Mehta says.
