Heartbreaking: 2,50,000 Indian Americans At Risk

Over 250,000 children of legal immigrants, many of them Indian-Americans, risk being deported when they turn 21. These kids, known as ‘Documented Dreamers,’ came to the US with their parents on temporary work visas. When they hit 21, they lose their dependent status and could be forced to leave the country.

A study shows over 1.2 million Indians, including their families, are waiting for green cards. According to the law, a child is someone unmarried and under 21. If they turn 21 before their green card is approved, they no longer count as a child and might face delays or become ineligible for a green card.

The White House blames Republicans for not supporting a solution, noting they have twice rejected a bipartisan plan. Lawmakers are urging the Biden Administration to protect these kids, highlighting that they grew up and were educated in the US but are stuck in the green card backlog.

Groups like Improve The Dream are fighting for these children, meeting with officials to find a solution. Personal stories show their struggles: Jefrina, a grad student, and Praneetha, a cloud engineer, face an uncertain future in the US. Roshan had to leave the US after turning 21, despite living there for almost 16 years.
