Tata Motors has revealed that its forthcoming Curvv coupe SUV will mark the debut of the brand’s all-new 1.2L TGDi petrol engine, named ‘Hyperion’. This three-cylinder gasoline motor was first showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo alongside the 170PS, 1.5L, four-cylinder engine. The 1.2L turbo petrol unit delivers a claimed power of 125PS at 5,000rpm and 225Nm of torque at 1700rpm – 3500rpm. Both motors can run on petrol and an E20 ethanol petrol mix fuel. Furthermore, Tata’s new petrol engine complies with the BS6 Phase II emission standards.

The carmaker said that its new turbo petrol engines have all-aluminum construction, thus making them lightweight and enhancing their stiffness, power, and fuel efficiency. The new 1.2L and 1.5L turbo Tata Hyperion petrol engines benefit from high-pressure direct injection technology, water-cooled variable geometry turbochargers, an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head, an advanced combustion system, dual cam phasing, a variable oil pump, and a maintenance-free valve train and timing chain.

The upcoming Tata Curvv petrol will witness a market launch during the 2024 festive season. The new gasoline unit will be offered with both manual (6-speed) and DCT automatic (7-speed) gearboxes. The coupe SUV will also be available with the 1.2L turbo petrol and 1.5L diesel engine options. Its ICE version will compete against mid-size SUVs including Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Hyundai Creta, Honda Elevate, and Kia Seltos.

The Tata Curvv EV is slated to go on sale in India on 7th August 2024. Its specifications are yet to be revealed. However, the electric coupe SUV is reported to come with two battery packs, offering a range of up to 550km on a single charge. The Curvv EV will soon have Citroen Basalt as its close rival, which is due for release this month. Prices of the new Tata coupe SUV are estimated to start from Rs 16 lakh and go up to Rs 22 lakh (all ex-showroom).
