2 Tata CNG SUVs Planned – All Key Details

In FY2024, Tata Motors registered significant sales growth in CNG vehicles, with nearly 91,000 units sold. The carmaker introduced its first CNG models—the Tiago hatchback and Tigor compact sedan—in late FY2022, followed by the Altroz iCNG and Punch iCNG. The latter two models feature Tata’s new twin-cylinder technology. Subsequently, the Tiago and Tigor CNG have also been upgraded with the dual-cylinder technology.

Buoyed by the success of its CNG vehicles, Tata Motors aims to further expand its CNG model lineup with the Nexon CNG. First showcased at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Show, the subcompact SUV will come with a 1.2L turbo petrol engine paired with the dual-cylinder technology. A manual gearbox will be available, and there is a possibility that the Nexon CNG could also be offered with an AMT gearbox, as seen in the Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG. The model is likely to hit the roads early next year and will compete against the Maruti Brezza CNG.

The second CNG offering from Tata could be the Curvv SUV coupe, which is said to be “under active consideration.” The Tata Curvv’s petrol version, which is scheduled to launch on 2nd September 2024, will mark the debut of the brand’s new 1.2L, three-cylinder direct injection petrol engine. This engine delivers a maximum power of 125bhp and 225Nm of torque. It runs on petrol and an E20 ethanol-petrol mix and complies with the BS6 Phase II emission standards. The same powertrain will be offered with Tata’s dual-cylinder CNG technology.

The upcoming Tata CNG models are expected to be priced nearly Rs 50,000–Rs 60,000 higher than their regular counterparts. Recently, the indigenous automaker also confirmed that its future cars (including the new-gen Nexon, Sierra, and EVs) will be based on the new Atlas platform, which debuted with the Tata Curvv EV.
