KURNOOL: Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy emphasised the need for an airport in Ongole region, citing granite, aqua and tobacco industries located in the region. He assured that the Ongole airport will become a reality soon.
During a review meeting on Thursday, the MP mentioned that land in Allur and Alur areas of Kothapatnam mandal has been identified for the construction of the airport. Srinivasulu Reddy maintained that he had proposed the idea of an airport for the district way back in 2004. But the project faced delays for several reasons. He underlined that the development of Andhra Pradesh is heavily dependent on expanding infrastructure, such as airports and ports.
The MP reminded that the union civil aviation minister has announced construction of seven new airports in AP, including the one in Ongole.
Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhan said the land identified for the airport is located just five kilometres from Ongole city. Those who attended the review meeting included joint collector Ronanki Gopalakrishna, Ongole mayor Gangada Sujatha, DRO Visveswara Rao, revenue divisional officer G.V. Subba Reddy and Kothapatnam tahsildar Madhusudan Rao.
