TIRUPATI: The Palamaner police arrested two women on Tuesday for allegedly stealing jewellery worth `4.5 lakhs from a bus passenger. The case was solved within five hours of receiving the complaint.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when Uma Devi, travelling from Tirupati to Bangalore, became the target of a carefully planned theft. Two women, who boarded the bus at Bangarupalem, engaged her in conversation before stealing her purse containing valuable jewellery.
“The suspects used a classic distraction technique. They gained the victim’s trust through friendly chat and then suggested she move her bag, creating an opportunity for the theft,” said Inspector Narasimha Raju, who led the investigation.

After discovering the theft, Uma Devi filed a complaint at Palamaner police station at around 2. 00 pm. A case was immediately registered. District superintendent of police V.N. Manikanta Chandolu ordered a special team comprising Palamaner and Chittoor crime police to investigate.
“Using technical surveillance, the team traced the suspects to Chittoor. By 8. 00 pm, six hours after the complaint, the team had arrested the accused – T. Sravani and T. Lakshmi, both residents of Mangasamudram, Chittoor Rural,” inspector Raju stated.

The stolen items, including a 30g gold chain (`1,50,000), a 25g gold bangle (`1,40,000), diamond earrings (`1,50,000), and a watch (`10,000), were recovered and returned to Uma Devi. The accused are in custody, facing charges of theft and deception.
