Will Foreign Universities Lose Charm after Path-Breaking Step?

Millions of Indians travel abroad every year for higher education and better work opportunities. In such a climate it is the government’s job to cultivate a culture and build infrastructure where locals can have good opportunities at home.

These were some of the aims of the New Education Policy (NEP) of 2020. Now, under this policy, the Indian government has welcomed its first foreign university in the country. The UK’s University of Southampton, in a major development, has announced that it will set up its campus in Delhi-NCR.

While NEP 2020 faced some criticism from the opposition, and educators at times, many agreed that it had some changes for good as well. This recent news is going to help students who aspire to study in foreign universities but can’t afford the education fees or the cost of living abroad. It also opens pathways for various other universities to be set up in India.

Will it lead to more people opting for local education instead of foreign? The Indian government surely hopes so as the Education minister highlighted the NEP’s aim to have “Internationalisation at home.” While there is no fixed date when the University campus will be set up, this is a major announcement for students and parents who aim to give their children a premium education.
