Hyderabad: One person was killed as heavy rain engulfed most parts of the state, the result of a deep depression off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday, prompting a statewide alert.
The government has declared a holiday for primary and secondary schools in Hyderabad district on Monday as a precautionary measure.
Cattle grazer Tekam Ganesh washed away in floodwaters while crossing the overflowing Bandlavagun rivulet in Bondaguda of Asifabad mandal in Komaram Bheem Asifabad district. His body has been recovered.
The state has been experiencing torrential rainfall since Friday evening. In Nagarkurnool district, a warning for landslides was issued near the Uma Maheswara temple, where floodwaters were entering.
In other districts, Suryapet has recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with 248.3 mm reported in Huzurnagar. Mulugu and Khammam districts have also experienced severe downpours, with cumulative rainfall reaching 216.3 mm and 188.3 mm, respectively. The situation in these districts is critical, with authorities closely monitoring the water levels in reservoirs, streams, and rivers.
The weather conditions have also affected other districts, including Mahbubnagar, where continuous rainfall has led to the flooding of the Jadcherla Government Hospital, making it difficult for patients and staff to access the facility. In Nalgonda district, heavy rains have caused temporary bridges to collapse, cutting off access to several villages and leaving many areas submerged.
The IMD has predicted that the heavy rainfall will persist over the next few days, with districts such as Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and Nalgonda expected to receive more downpours. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are on high alert, with ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of the severe weather.
With Telangana receiving an average rainfall of 627.6 mm so far, the state is likely to see a significant increase in this figure with the current weather conditions.
