Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has confirmed its plan to enter the electric two-wheeler segment with a scooter during this financial year. The information comes from HMSI’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Yogesh Mathur, during his address to the media at the 64th SIAM Annual Convention 2024. He mentioned that Honda’s first electric offering will be introduced nationwide in a phased manner. With this new EV, the two-wheeler maker will target buyers within the age group of 18–40 years.
While Mathur didn’t reveal the name or details of the upcoming Honda electric scooter, it has been confirmed that the model is being developed jointly by HMSI and Honda’s Japan-based team. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer aims to achieve one-third of its total sales from EVs by 2030. The upcoming Honda electric scooter is speculated to be the long-rumored Honda Activa EV, which will compete with models like the Ather 450X, TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and Ola Electric S1.
According to a latest media reportthe Honda Activa electric is in its final phase of validation and will soon enter production. The final version of the electric scooter is expected to debut by December 2024, with bookings and deliveries likely to start in February 2025.
While no official details are available at this point, it is expected that the Honda Activa EV will receive a few EV-specific design changes. Its design language and most styling elements are likely to be similar to its ICE version. The EV might feature a wide front apron, an LED headlamp, and a flat seat, along with features such as a touchscreen display, a fully digital instrument cluster, navigation, and connected tech.
The upcoming Honda electric scooter is speculated to deliver a range of around 100 km–150 km on a full charge. Its powertrain specifications are yet to be revealed. Like its ICE version, the Activa EV might use conventional telescopic forks at the front and preload-adjustable monoshock rear suspensions. It’s likely to come with front disc and rear drum brakes.
