BYD is all set to launch the eMax 7 electric MPV in India on 8th October 2024. It’s essentially a heavily updated version of the e6, featuring a three-row seating configuration and more advanced technology. Furthermore, the Chinese electric four-wheeler manufacturer will expand its product lineup with a new midsize electric SUV. This model will compete against the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX and Hyundai Creta EV. The Tata Curvv EV and Citroen Basalt will also be rivals in this segment.
Speaking to an online media publication, Rajeev Chauhan, Head of the EPV (Electric Passenger Vehicles) Business at BYD India, confirmed that the upcoming BYD electric SUV will be priced around Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). The model is expected to hit the roads by the second half of 2025. He also revealed that BYD plans to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles in India within the next two years. The company will conduct a market study for the next 6–8 months and then launch its first “plug-in hybrid offering at an affordable price.”
Talking about the upcoming BYD eMax 7, the electric MPV is likely to be offered in both 6- and 7-seat configurations. It will feature a fixed panoramic glass roof, leatherette upholstery, soft-touch materials on the dashboard, a revised center console with faux wood and aluminum inserts, and an ADAS suite, along with the brand’s signature 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen.
In global markets, the BYD eMax 7 is offered with two battery options – 55.4kWh and 71.8kWh. While the former offers a claimed range of 420km, the latter promises 530km on a single charge. In India, the electric MPV is expected to come with the larger 71.8kWh battery pack, which produces a maximum power of 204bhp and 310Nm of torque.
Compared to the e6, which was available at Rs 29.15 lakh, the eMax 7 will likely be priced at a slight premium. Once launched, it will compete with the top-end variant of the Toyota Innova Hycross, priced at Rs 30.98 lakh (ex-showroom).
