Visakhapatnam: B. Lavanya Veni, the director of social welfare for Andhra Pradesh, conducted a surprise inspection of social welfare hostels in Visakhapatnam on Friday.
She visited Boys Hostel No. 1 and the College Girls Hostel at Central Park, interacting with students to assess the quality of facilities and services.
During her visit, Veni inquired about the students’ well-being, the implementation of the hostel menu, and the quality of food provided. She was pleased to hear that the students were satisfied with the amenities and support offered by the government.
To ensure the students’ comfort during the upcoming winter, Veni distributed blankets to the boy’s hostel boarders.
She also encouraged them to focus on their studies and achieve their goals. The director emphasized the importance of following standard operating procedures to prevent seasonal diseases, and food poisoning, and ensure the safety and security of hostel residents.
She advised welfare officials to prioritize these measures. The Hostel Welfare Officers Association submitted a memorandum to Veni, requesting an increase in diet charges, the release of diet and cosmetics charges, and the provision of cooking utensils, and biometric equipment. The director assured them that she would address these concerns and work towards improving the facilities and services offered to the students. Veni expressed satisfaction with her visit and thanked the Visakhapatnam district collector for renovating the social welfare hostels with Rs 5 crore from discretionary funds.
