NEW DELHI: India set a new record for the highest run-rate in a Test match, achieving a remarkable combined run-rate of 7.36 during their match against Bangladesh in Kanpur. This broke the previous record held by South Africa, who recorded a run-rate of 6.80 against Zimbabwe in Cape Town in 2005.
The victory also marked a historic first for India, as it was the first time they won a Test match without facing a single maiden over throughout the entire game.
Indian batters showcased an extraordinary batting performance during the Kanpur Testamassing a total of 383 runs in a mere 52 overs across both innings. What stood out was their incredible run-rate of 8.22 in the first innings alone, where they accumulated 285 runs in just 34.4 overs.
Highest run-rate by a team in a Test (both innings combined)

  • 7.36 – IND vs BAN, Kanpur, 2024
  • 6.80 – SA vs ZIM, Cape Town, 2005
  • 6.73 – ENG vs PAK, Rawalpindi, 2022
  • 6.43 – ENG vs IRE, Lord’s, 2023
  • 5.73 – ENG vs BAN, Chester-le-Street, 2005

During this breathtaking session, India achieved a series of unprecedented milestones in Test cricket history. They recorded the fastest team 50, team 100, 150, 200, and 250, all within a single afternoon’s play.
India pulled off a remarkable seven-wicket victory in a rain-hit match as they reached their victory target of 95 in just 104 balls in the second session on Day 5.
Rohit Sharma’s team appears twice in the top five list of quickest results in Test cricket’s 147-year history, achieving two rapid victories within just nine months. The first of these swift wins was India’s triumph over South Africa in Cape Town earlier this year.
The series victory extends India’s lead at the top of the World Test Championship rankings ahead of Australia in second.
